The World Around Us
Scientific enquiry is taught through contexts such as life processes, living things, materials and their properties and physical processes. Pupils learn to question, hypothesise, make predictions and relate their developing understanding to life. Practical investigation and recording observations form a large part of the learning.
Our history teaching aims to fire the children’s interest about the past through a consideration of those influences on the present. Also strongly featured are class visits, visitors, role play and artefacts for handling and display. Children are encouraged to contribute to their own learning through reading and research, then share their discoveries with others.
Care and concern for the world and ecological issues complement learning about physical features and systems such as the weather or the water cycle. Maps and mapping skills are also taught. Practical work and visits are arranged where possible.
